- As far as I'm concerned it is disposable software for the A4000. Unless you
- own a Squirrel setup, you use it once and then it's off to the shit pile.
-
- I have a similar setup as you, A4000/040 WarpEngine. The tech person at Safe
- Harbor told me that Squirrel Tools is only used for deprotecting the ZIPTools
- disk you receive from Iomega. The disk is an IBM formatted ZIP along with
- some type of password protection. Squirrel Tools removes the password
- protection from the disk allowing you to format it as Amiga or whatever. The
- disks you buy blank can be used with HDTools and the format command.
-
- $19.00 to make a blank ZIP disk seems a bit much, but I bit on it. It is
- basically worthless to me now, so I will sell it. Besides that, the Squirrel
- Tools floppy I received was formatted for the Atari of all things and was
- useless for me, but Safe Harbor saved the day and took care of it. Again!
-
- You will also encounter connection problems depending upon the SCSI interface
- you are using. The ZIP uses the 25-pin? connector and my A4091 uses the
- 50-pin mini-connector. So, I buy the cable with 25 on one end and SCSI-1 on
- the other. The 50 pin on the cable is SCSI-1, so it is not the same as the 50
- pin on the A4091, so then you need a 50 pin SCSI-1 to SCSI-2 adaptor. Works
- like a champ! Looks like shit, but it works.
-
- If you use the Warp Engine SCSI-2 you'll need the 50 Female to SCSI-2 Female
- socket along with a ribbon cable to connect the socket to the Warp Engine. I
- haven't installed it yet(yep, ate it big time when I bought into this deal),
- but I do have setups for both the A4091 or the Warp Engine now. Guess I
- shouldn't have told them to shoot the works! ;^)
-
- As for the drive, it's great! It's what floppy drives should have been from
- the start. I'm looking forward to moving on to the JAZZ drive when it comes
- down in price a little. I see the ZIP as an intermediate format that probably
- won't last a whole long while, once the JAZZ and others become accepted and
- readily available. The ZIP just allows me to offload the crap from my much
- faster hard drive and give me some headroom until my next purchase, then it
- will be relegated to strictly archives, etc.
-
- Oh yeah, prices. If you go with the Warp Engine add about $45.00
- If you're using the A4091 add $35.00
-
- Was it worth it. Economically, no, but it's already paid for itself, just by
- freeing me from the headaches floppies have caused in the past.
-
- Works great with the VLAB digitizer for time lapse and World Construction Set
- for frames and PageStream.............
-
- Later,
- -Kirk
